Lotus leaf (folium loti) (f2v)

The leaves of the lotus, by virtue of their medicinal nature and astringent properties, are considered beneficial for the treatment of varicose veins. They are prepared with jujube molasses and a laxative, making use as well of the natural astringency of the leaves, whose effect is regarded as beneficial. The preparation is boiled and adjusted for therapeutic purposes; the root of the plant is also employed, and the leaves are cooked after having been placed in maceration. The mixture is produced through kneading and bound together to reinforce its astringent action, with the corresponding medical indication duly recorded. When applied wrapped, it acts effectively, being regulated through successive boilings intended for the treatment of varicose veins. Finally, it is steam-cooked and placed upon the affected area.

The pulp is crushed until a soft consistency is obtained and is secured with bandages, being applied as a compress over the varicose veins. With jujube molasses, an adhesive powder is prepared which forms a moist paste derived from the leaves and intended for the same treatment. The preparation is arranged in bound fragments and its application upon the affected area at rest is prescribed. The resulting product is again ground, broken down, and subjected to boiling for this purpose. Lastly, the decoction of the flower provides a therapeutic virtue of a resolving nature when applied wrapped as a remedy.

The plant illustrations in this manuscript do not necessarily represent the exact morphology of the identified species, but rather highlight the parts of medicinal interest and their therapeutic uses. The shapes and arrangements are stylized conventions typical of medieval manuscript tradition.
